Republican Rep. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) has been set to deliver an opening statement at the first hearing of the January 6 select committee. At the hearing on Tuesday, Cheney’s remarks have been scheduled to follow the Democrat chair of the committee, Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson (D).

Following the remarks, the committee is expected to hear testimony from four Capitol Hill officers, who were on duty during the events on January 6. Cheney’s appointment has led to increasing hostility between her and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), which prompted Cheney to accuse McCarthy of attempting to hide the truth.

“There must be an investigation that is nonpartisan, that is sober, that is serious, that gets to the facts wherever they may lead,” she stated. “At every opportunity, the minority leader has attempted to prevent the American people from understanding what happened.”

However, McCarthy appointed five other Republicans to the committee in an effort to promote bipartisanship until Nancy Pelosi vetoed two picks. Her veto led McCarthy to pull the Republicans and label the committee a “political stunt.”

If Republican speaker had pulled same stunt that Pelosi did this week and determined that only one point of view is allowed in a committee hearing, the media would yell that Republicans are “authoritarian” and destroyed tradition of allowing debate. Media has given Pelosi a pass!

Following Cheney’s appointment, along with that of anti-Trump Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), McCarthy left open whether they would be stripped of their committee assignments. When talking to a reporter on Monday, he went as far as to call both representatives “Pelosi Republicans.”
