Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) won the special election to fill the vacant seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. On Tuesday night, Stansbury was declared the winner after beating opponent Sen. Mark Moores (R-N.M) by 30 percent of the vote.

The race was heavily focused on crime as the homicide rate has jumped in the state’s largest city of Albuquerque. Stansbury was painted as anti-law enforcement throughout the race. The Democrat also relied heavily on her science background in order to appear supportive of New Mexico’s natural resource industries. Her campaign was said to heavily correspond with objectives of the Biden administration.

Thank you Mark for representing New Mexico and fighting the good fight for our state.
We will continue this fight for competent leadership for the sake of our safety, our opportunity and our freedom. We are committed to win this seat in 2022.

This recent win for Stansbury will push the Democrat House majority up to nine seats. Although the preservation of this majority will become difficult as multiple Democrats are expected to either retire or seek different elected office positions within the next year.

“When our families and our communities demand it, when our country demands it, we step up and find the solutions for our communities and we figure it out,” the Democrat representative declared. “That is exactly what we did in this campaign.”

The seat for the state’s first congressional district opened up after Joe Biden tapped Deb Haaland to head the Department of Interior.
