Two people were killed and a police officer was injured after a shooting during a traffic stop in San Antonio, Texas. According to reports Friday, the officer initiated the traffic stop just before noon and had been talking with the driver for a few minutes.

Suddenly, the driver allegedly drew a gun and began firing, hitting the officer in the hand. The officer retreated and returned fire, killing the driver and a male passenger.

“The officer is very, very lucky to be alive,” Chief William McManus said. “At that close range, having been shot in the hand and not somewhere else more vital. The surprising thing to me was the conversation at the door was very casual.”

A third female passenger in the vehicle was also hit in the chest and taken to a local hospital. Authorities couldn’t comment on the condition of either the officer or the injured passenger.
