Dem Rep. says ‘not appropriate’ for press to access migrant facilities

WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 29: U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) speaks during a news conference about the Child Care Is Essential Act and the Child Care For Economic Recovery Act at the U.S. Capitol on July 29, 2020 in Washington, DC. The House is scheduled to vote later Wednesday afternoon on the two bills aimed at financially supporting child care providers and providing access to child care for American workers during the coronavirus pandemic. At least one House Democrat supports the Biden administration’s controversial secrecy surrounding migrant holding facilities. In an interview Thursday, Rep. Linda Sanchez (R-Calif.) said COVID protocols have stopped the government from properly housing minors.

She also said the federal government has been doing the best it can even though she admitted the facilities are not meant to take in illegal immigrant children. Sanchez’s response was the exact opposite of calls for transparency during the Trump-era.

Now, the Democrat lawmaker appears to have a different opinion on the matter.

“I don’t necessarily think that it’s appropriate for journalists to be inside centers that are not permanent places for children,” Sanchez claimed. “They are processed out of those facilities as quickly as possible and as quickly as the facilities will allow.”

The congresswoman’s comments came as journalists and refugee advocates have demanded to see for themselves the conditions at migrant housing facilities along the southern border.
