Police are investigating the murder of a retired Chicago firefighter who was tragically killed during an attempted carjacking.

On Friday, Chicago PD offered an $8,000 reward for any information regarding the death of 65-year-old Lieutenant Dwain Williams.

According to reports, Williams was shot in the stomach on Thursday while trying to stop four men from stealing his car outside a popcorn shop.

The armed carjackers reportedly pulled up to him in a dark sedan while he was walking to his car.

Authorities said Williams shot back at the suspects, though it is unknown if he succeeded in hitting any of them. After the shootout, the retired firefighter was quickly taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Williams served 26 years with the Chicago Fire Department before he retired two years ago. He is survived by his wife and four adult children.

His family remembers him as someone that was always willing to help others.

“He was a man that was a gentle, loving spirit,” Dwain’s wife, Karen Williams, stated. “He was a gentle giant.”

Community members set up a memorial outside the store where the incident happened. They are outraged by the violent incident.

“I say to the shooters: What if this was your father? You’ve got a father! What if this was your grandfather, your uncle?” Anti-violence activist Andrew Holmes questioned. “What did you get out of taking his life? Nothing!”

No arrests have been made and an investigation remains ongoing.

“If and indeed you get a call that they’re looking for your son or your nephew, help them,”  Holmes stated. “Give the detectives the information of where they’re at because [this] was wrong.”

The tragic incident comes amid a major spike in crime in Chicago. The CPD reported responding to more than 1,200 carjackings in 2020 so far.
