The leaders of Spain and Portugal gathered this weekend to discuss a recent rise in coronavirus cases within the Iberian Peninsula. On Saturday, Prime Ministers Antonio Costa and Pedro Sanchez discussed the health and safety measures in both countries, which are suffering economically due to the pandemic.

Costa has said his country cannot resort to a second lockdown in response to the rising case numbers.

“I think we all know that society, families, companies cannot afford the cost of a general lockdown like the one we had at the beginning of the pandemic,” he said. “We have over 100,000 unemployed people, the price of this pandemic.”

Meanwhile, Sanchez has argued leaders should listen to doctors and scientists. He added the country needs to find an end to partisan fighting.
